Fine Art Director

The 567 Center for Renewal is seeking a people-loving, detailed-oriented artist to fill the role of Fine Art Director. As part of our mission to bring creative life to downtown Macon, this position oversees all the art classes and other art programming at The 567 Center, as well as interacting regularly with visitors to the Center. The Fine Art Director will also be involved in keeping our community pottery studio running for the 30 member artists. The Fine Art Director will work twenty hours per week on average, including occasional nights and weekends, with the potential for more hours if desired. They will work closely with the Executive Director as they lead the organization and develop programming together with the goals of attracting visitors and residents to downtown with great art experiences and helping artists to thrive. They will also work with the curator as we grow our gallery and help artists sell their work.

Responsibilities include:

  • recruiting, scheduling and coordinating instructors for art classes and making sure instructors have what they need to succeed

  • developing new art programming in collaboration with the executive director and/or artists in the community

  • managing and organizing inventory for class and building supplies, including purchasing supplies as necessary

  • setting up and cleaning up the classroom as needed during the week

  • maintaining the gallery space, pottery studio, and other parts of the building, including cleaning and minor repairs as needed

  • overseeing opening receptions on the First Friday of every month

  • scheduling, training and managing volunteers

  • processing gallery sales using both digital devices and written records

  • providing customer service, both in person and on the phone

  • developing new art programming in collaboration with the executive director and/or artists in the community

  • assisting with public art programs

  • assisting with recruiting artists for and organizing the fall art festival

  • assisting with all fundraising events and campaigns

Qualifications include:

  • a degree in a visual art-related field or a strong visual art background (including skills in at least one artistic medium)

  • strong communication skills (verbal and written)

  • strong organizational skills

  • attention to detail

  • excellent interpersonal skills

  • ability to work as part of a team

  • ability to plan ahead

  • good computer skills

  • ability to lift up to 50 lbs

Preferred, but not required:

  • supervisory experience (either in a professional or volunteer capacity)

  • pottery experience (or a willingness to learn)

  • excitement to learn new things

  • a love for downtown Macon!

The Fine Art Director will not necessarily teach classes, but they will have the option. Teaching will be in addition to the twenty to twenty-five hours per week. Depending on the candidate’s skills and interests, they may also have the opportunity to organize the gallery displays, load the pottery kiln, and assist with glass blowing workshops. The Fine Art Director will normally work 4 days per week, but will be somewhat “on call” 6 days per week, as needs arise for the classes, gallery, or studio throughout the week. They should also be willing to attend community events occasionally to grow their connections in the community with other artists and with the general public.
